    Authors and reviewers

Manuscripts should be reviewed with due respect for author confidentiality. By submitting their manuscripts for consideration, authors trust the editors with the results of their scientific work and creative efforts, on which their reputation and career may depend. Authors' rights may be violated if confidential information is disclosed during manuscript review. Reviewers also have a right to confidentiality, which must be maintained by the editor. Confidentiality may be breached if dishonesty or fraud is involved, but must otherwise be maintained.

The Editorial Board must not disclose information about manuscripts (including their receipt, content, pending status, reviewer critiques, or final fate) to anyone other than authors and reviewers. This includes requests to use materials for lawful purposes.

The editors must make it clear to their reviewers that the manuscripts submitted for review are privileged and the private property of the authors. Therefore, reviewers and members of the editorial board must respect the rights of authors by not publicly discussing their work and not appropriating their ideas for the publication of the manuscript. Reviewers are not permitted to make copies of manuscripts for their own files, nor are they permitted to pass them on to others, except with the editor's permission. Reviewers must return or destroy copies of manuscripts after submission of feedback. The editors should not keep copies of rejected manuscripts.

Reviewer comments may not be published or otherwise made public without the permission of the reviewer, author, and editor.

Opinions differ on whether reviewers should remain anonymous. Authors should consult the Information for Authors of the journal to which they choose to submit a manuscript to determine whether reviews are anonymous. Unless comments are signed, the identities of the reviewers must not be disclosed to the author or anyone else without the reviewers' permission.

Some journals publish reviewers' comments with the manuscript. Such a procedure is not allowed without the consent of the authors and reviewers. However, reviewers' comments are sent to other reviewers on the same manuscript, which helps reviewers understand the review process.
